Vadzim Kachan

Vadim Kachan (born on October 8, 1958, village Zalyadynye, Ivanovsk district, Brest region, BSSR) – photographer, a photography teacher, one of the organizers and the first chairman of the Belarusian public association “Fotoiskusstvo” (2003). Lives and works in Minsk.

In 1980 Kachan graduated from the Belarusian Technological Institute named after S.M. Kirov in Minsk. From 1980 to 1990 he was a member of the photoclub “Vecherniy Minsk”, participated in the project “Photo Manifesto: Contemporary Photography in the USSR” (“Manege”, Moscow), dedicated to the 150th anniversary of photography, as well as in a number of club photography exhibitions in Belarus, etc .

From 1991 to 2003 Vadim Kachan did not photograph much. In 2003 he returned to photography with a personal exhibition “Fragments” in the gallery NOVA (Minsk).

Vadim Kachan’s photo album “Photos of Past Years” (2005) became the first album-book, dedicated to the creative path of a particular art photographer in the contemporary Belarus. It included both photographs made by Kachan in the 1980s and his stories “Puzzles of the Past Years.”

Since 2007 Vadim Kachan also has been teaching photography.

His photographic practice is studied in the context of the phenomenon of the Minsk school of creative photography.
